Cello Sizing and Proper Position

Posted by Kevin Damm on

Cello Size for Young Beginners

You need the right size Cello when beginning to learn how to play. Most students in the Wichita Metro area begin School Orchestra Class in 5th or 6th grade and they will need a 1/2, 3/4 and sometime 4/4 (full size) Cello.

The best way to determine what size is needed for your student is to have their Orchestra Teacher size them, or come into Damm Music Center to be sized.

If you'd like to get an idea of what size may be needed, we use the following chart: Height, Arm Length, and Finger Span.

Height: Measure while standing upright with good posture.

Arm Length: Measure from the shoulder joint to the tip of the middle finger.

Finger Span: Extend fingers as if playing in first position, then measuring from the tip of the index finger to the tip of the pinky.

Height             Arm Length
Finger Span
Cello Size
3'6" to 4' 18" to 20" 3" to 4" 1/4 Size Cello
4' to 4'6" 20" to 22" 4" to 5" 1/2 Size Cello
4'6" to 5' 22" to 24" 5" to 6" 3/4 Size Cello
5' & Over 24" & Over 6" & Over 4/4 Full Size Cello

This chart is for general use and approximate guidelines. For proper fitting for size, students should consult with their private instructor, orchestra teacher, an experienced cellist or Damm Music Center.
