RECRUITMENT

By now, many middle schools are starting instrument screenings/pairings for incoming beginners. Don't forget the importance of communicating with your local dealers regarding your wishes for instrument rentals and supplies. Share this information with the parents of your students.
RETENTION

High school directors should be visiting their middle school campuses throughout the year! Getting to know your rising freshmen is key to them enrolling in the high school program!

Schedule a camp at the end of the spring semester to introduce new members to standard tunes such as the school song, fight song, and other favorites. Involving your high school leadership gives them ownership thus increasing retention once they are in your program!
SUCCESS

Make plans to visit another director’s rehearsal to learn new techniques.

Attend a different district’s evaluation/assessment/contest. You will hear different music and witness the results of different teaching strategies.

Attend your state’s summer music convention. If your state doesn’t have a summer music meeting, consider attending Music For All’s Summer Camp! The Director Academy is amazing!

Take lessons on an instrument you want to know more about. Trade lessons with someone who plays a different instrument.
